Data sources
- State and county boundaries: U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary files at 1:10,000,000 scale, via the open-source us-atlas project.
- Population: 2020 Census resident population for states and cities (U.S. Census Bureau).
- Counties: 2020 Census population by county and 2020 Census Gazetteer land and water areas (U.S. Census Bureau). County seats are taken from Wikipedia’s state county lists, cross-checked against Wikidata.
- Area: total area (land plus water) in square miles, U.S. Census Bureau.
- Statehood dates, capitals and codes: official state and federal sources, including USPS Publication 28 for postal abbreviations and the Census Bureau for FIPS codes.
- Street-level background maps on state pages: © OpenStreetMap contributors.
How the maps are drawn
National maps use the Albers equal-area conic projection, the standard for US maps because it preserves relative area. Alaska and Hawaii appear as insets; Alaska is shown at reduced scale. State maps use Web Mercator so they line up with the zoomable street map. Interactive maps are built with the open-source Leaflet library and load only when you interact with the page, which keeps every page fast.
