Together these five hold 53.4% of the state’s population. The least populous is Alpine County, with 1,204 residents.

Largest and smallest counties

By land area, the largest are San Bernardino County (20,068.0 sq mi), Inyo County (10,197.3 sq mi) and Kern County (8,134.6 sq mi). The smallest is San Francisco County, with 46.9 sq mi of land, followed by Santa Cruz County (445.1 sq mi). The average county covers 2,687.2 sq mi of land.
