How counties work in Maine
Maine’s counties have a smaller role than in most states. Most local services, such as schools, roads and zoning, are run by towns and cities. Counties handle functions such as the sheriff’s office, the county jail and the registry of deeds.
Large parts of northern and western Maine are unorganized territory, with no town government. Aroostook County alone covers 21.6% of the state’s land area, yet holds 4.9% of its people.
